The HO Scale Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Los Angeles Division represents the Fourth
District, or "Surf Line," in San Diego, circa 1941.
Also represented is the SP-controlled shortline, the San Diego and Arizona Eastern.
The railroad is in 25 by 25 foot basement, with walk-in staging in a separate
room. Modeling the area around San Diego affords many switching opportunities.
The Santa Fe and SD&AE serve several industries including the Marine Base, Consolidated Aircraft, municipal piers, several manufacturing companies, fish canneries and the Naval Air Station at North
Island. To see the track plan, go to Surf Line Layout
Plan. The layout utilizes CVP's Railcommand with all wireless
throttles. Dispatching is by T&TO, though having the entire layout within
yard limits simplifies movements. The layout is partially sceniced and
populated with buildings and mock-ups.
This could be your last chance to operate an all-steam layout as
Keith is moving his era back to 1952 after Prairie Rail, which means that
Diesels will take over most steam assignments.
For additional information on Keith's San Diego layout, see his
article in the 2001 issue of Model Railroad Planning from Kalmbach.
