Wilhelm² Daavidinpoika SEPPÄLÄ, born probably in Perttula (now Ypäjä), Häme, Finland 8 August 1814;¹died in Perttula, 13 April 1887;² married first about 1846 Johanna MATINTYTÄR,³ born in Metsämää, Turku-Pori, Finland 22 September 1815;⁴ died in Perttula 9 August 1856 of “mother’s fever;”⁵ married second in Perttula 5 December 1857 Maria Kristiina³ JOBINTYTÄR (or HELANDER) (Job², Juho¹),⁵ born in Loimijoki (now Loimaa), Turku-Pori, Finland about 12 October 1830,⁶daughter of Job JUHONPOIKA (or HELANDER) (Juho¹) and Maija⁴ TUOMANTYTÄR (Tuoma³, Matti², Matti¹);⁷ died in Perttula 13 November 1901.⁸

Unfortunately, most church records from Perttula exist only from 1838 on. My grandmother once told me her grandparents’ church burned down, so fire is probably the explanation for the late start in the records.

Wilhelm² Seppälä’s birth record, if there was one, no longer exists. His family apparently used the surname Höjer until after 1862, but his name was given as Wilhelm Daavidinpoika Seppälä in his death record, with no mention of the surname Höjer.⁹ Apparently Wilhelm² Daavidinpoika Seppälä preferred the more Finnish name, Seppälä, in his later years.

The date and place of his birth can only be surmised from the communion books. The same is true for the date and place of birth of his first wife, Johanna Matintytär.¹⁰

The date of birth and even the name of her mother is a source of confusion for Maria Kristiina³ Jobintytär.¹¹ The Loimaa records show the same entry for Maria Kristiina³ Jobintytär’s birth on 12 August 1830, which is crossed out, and on 12 October 1830. When her birth date is first recorded in the communion books, it is given as 12 September 1830. This September date seems to have been copied in the subsequent church records. Since the October date was actually recorded close to the actual event and the ministers often seemed to copy birth dates incorrectly in the communion books, I think 12 October 1830 is the most likely date of Maria Kristiina³ Jobintytär’s birth. However, that is only an opinion.

In the Loimaa birth records, Maria Kristiina³ Jobintytär’s mother’s name is given as Maija⁴ Jaakontytär. However, the only marriage ever recorded for her father, Job² Juhonpoika, gives his wife’s name as Maija (Maria) Tuomantytär. The communion books are complete for the years surrounding Maria Kristiina³ Jobintytär’s birth. The only woman named as Job² Juhonpoika’s wife in those years is Maija Tuomantytär.¹² Therefore, I believe the Jaakontytär was just a mistake made by the minister, and Maria Kristiina³ Jobintytär’s mother was Maija⁴ Tuomantytär.

Maria Kristiina³ Jobintytär lived with her family on the Hennimäki torppari in the village of Ypäis until about 1845.¹³ In 1845, the family apparently moved to Lyly farm.¹⁴ After Maria Kristiina³ Jobintytär’s marriage to Wilhelm² Daavidinpoika Seppälä, she transferred her church membership from Loimijoki to Perttula.¹⁵
