Notes for
Moses COONS
In the 1840
census Moses was between 40 and 50 years old.
His wife is between 30 and 40, which doesn't match the estimated birth
date for his second wife, Elizabeth Tracy.
It also wouldn't fit with the marriage date I have listed. He has 7 children at this point (5 boys and
2 girls). This matches the additional
children in P. Lauterbach's gedcom. If it
was his first wife, Abegail Crawford, then her birth date would have been
between 1800 and 1810. (Indiana, series 704, roll 84, Johnson Co, Sheet 531 and
532, Page 283, Line 18)
On 15
December 1840 Moses purchases land in Indiana.
In the 1850
census Moses was 52 years old and farming with $800.00 in real estate. Elizabeth was 36 years old at this
time. There was one child that belonged
to the both of them (James S., 1 year old).
Four other children from Elizabeth's previous marriage live with them
also:
William, 14;
Mary E.,
Isabell, 8;
John C., 7.
At the time of the census they are in Johnson Co., Indiana, in the Nineveh Township. Rose Anna Coons (age 14) was living with her sister Lucy and her husband Martin McQuinn. Nicholas, who was only 11, was living with his older brother John and wife Sallie Prichard. (Series 432, roll 155, sheet 273, page 138, line 15).
In the 1860
census he was listed as having $1600.00 in real estate and $500.00 in his
personal estate. Here Moses and
Elizabeth are listed as not being able to read and write, even though the
previous census disputes this. Their
post office was in Greenwood. They were
living in the Pleasant Township of Johnson Co., Indiana. William Gritton (son of Elizabeth and Firmen
Gritton) was living next door with his wife Ruhanna and was working as a
farmer.
In the 1870
census2 their post office was in
Whiteland. He was still listed as
having $1600.00 in real estate and $325.00 in his personal estate. Moses was still farming and only living with
Sallie Coons who was keeping house. (Whom I take to be his daughter Sarah, even
though the dates from 1860 to 1870 don't match) It also stated that both Moses
and Elizabeth's parents were not of foreign birth.
