Notes for Joseph Crawford COONS

1850

Did not find him in Johnson Co., IN, and he wasn't living with his father either.

1860

Was living in the Marion Twp of Jasper Co. IN.  He was 32 and had $400.00 in real estate and $500.00 in his personal estate.  Joseph was living with his wife Nancy, two children Mahala and David, and one unrelated person with no occupation listed.  This person was 21, born in Ireland, and with a name that looked like John Openchani.  Pages15/8292

1870

Living with six children and Nancy in the Marion Twp of Jasper Co., IN.  Their post office was in Rennsselaer.  Joseph was working as a farmer and had $1295.00 in a personal estate and nothing listed in real estate.  This parallels with Harrison Coons, for he had a large amount in his personal estate and no real estate.  If Moses died in 1875, it would be unlikely that it could be inheritance money on the Coons side.  Joseph would have acquired a portion of Samuel Walker's estate when Emerine remarried. But why no real estate at the age of 38?  Was he saving it for the trip to Kansas?  According to Dorothy Hughes, the reason for them coming to Kansas was their son Samuel's tuberculosis.  The children were Mahala 14, David 12, Ida 10, Rosa 9, Samuel 4, and Mary at three months.  The four oldest were in school.  Pages 11/3553

1880

Joseph was living with Nancy and 6 children in the Barkley Twp of Jasper Co., IN.  By this time David Harrison Coons was no longer alive.  The children were Mahala J., Ida A., Rose B., Samuel E., Mary E. and Carrie E.  Rosa Arabelle must have been shortened to Rosa Bell.  Ida was a schoolteacher and Samuel was a laborer on a farm.  All but Mahala were in school.  By now David was no longer alive.  T9/286, Pages 267 A, E.D.60.4

1900

In 1900 he was living in the Bucklin Township.
