Ralph Alexander and Mary Jane McLaughlin Twitchel

Notes

Edward RIGGS

Named as a member of John Eliot's church, Roxbury, Mass.

Edward Riggs landed in Boston in the summer of l633 with his wife, Elizabeth, 2 sons & 4 daughters. He was a Puritan. They were among the early settlers in Roxbury, Mass. The first death recorded in the Roxbury Record book is that of Lydia, his daughter, in Aug. l633 shortly after their arrival. In May l634 another daughter, Elizbeth, died & in Oct. of the same year his son John died. This must have been very hard for Edward & the 2 who remained, Edward & Mary. The son Edward married that same year in April so just Mary & her Dad were leftat home alone. They must have wondered whether or not they made the right choice in coming to this wilderness.

In l634 Edward was admitted Freeman. He married again, after l635 to a woman also named Elizabeth. Many sources have both him & his son married to the same woman Elizabeth Rooke or Roosa, probably because of the time frame & both carrying the name Edward. He had no children by his second wife.

He died in l67l/2. His will dated Sept. 2, l670, listed Mary Twitchell as the only living child left. Mary Twitchell is named as legatee. Of her children only Joseph & Mary are named and they are minors. His daughter Mrs. Allen, who was dead, had l child & his son Edward, who was also dead, had 4 children. He served in the Pequot War with his son Edward who was known as a hero.
