James MELLEN

He chose his brother Thomas, guardian, when his Father died leaving him a minor. He was voted Selectman in Framingham l740 & probably died in Framingham or Hopkinton, Mass.

Thomas (Earl) BARNUM

He was born in Hollingbourne Hill, England. I have been unable to discover when he came to the New World. Some records state he was at Fairfield first then Norwalk, then Danbury, all in Ct. We know he had a land grant in Norwalk, Ct. in l663. His first child & several later children were born in Norwalk. He was also one of the founders of Norwalk. His first record in Fairfield is in l673 and in l678 he sold his land in Fairfield, apparently to move to Norwalk. Perhaps he moved between the two places. At a town meeting in Norwalk Nov. 8, l68l, he was "appointed for to oversee and to keep good Decorum amongst the youth in times of exercise on the Sabbath and other Publique meetings". He was one of the original 8 settlers of Danbury, Ct., who purchased land from the Indians in l684. By Spring of l865 they were living there & had made Danbury their home. In l67l he was listed among those having an estate in lands worth 40 pounds. He died at around 70 years of age. His estate at his death amounted to 330 pounds, 4 shillings & 4 pence & was divided among 5 sons & 5 daughters, the eldest son, Thomas (our ancestor), having a double portion. All of his children he had by his first wife. His widow Sarah (Thompson Hurd) returned to Stratfield after his Death & lived to be 76 years of age. She had a prenuptial agreement. I have a copy of a paper signed by her mark, a large S, releasing the estate from any monetary obligations for money in which she mentions her prenuptial contract. There is no real proof of the connection between the Barnums in England (Sir Francis) but there's a lot of circumstantial evidence pointing in that direction. Therefore the connection is made in this genealogy.

Thomas Barnum (Barnam), of Fairfield, purchased land at Norwalk, as early as l662. He received an appointment at Norwalk, as late as l676. His children born at Norwalk, were Thomas, born July 9, l663; John, born Feb. 24, l676/7; Hannah, born Oct. 4, l680; Ebbinezer, born May 29, l682. Mr Barnam removed to Danbury in the early settlement of the town, and perhaps had other children after his removal. He was the ancestor of those of the name now at Danbury, at Bridgeport, New York, Baltimore, &c., and of P.T. Barnum, of Bridgeport, a man as extraordinary in his way, as was Napoleon in his, or Julius Caesar in his. He had only learned when young, that the world loved humbugs more than realities, and he has feasted them upon fictions until he has satiated their appetites, and filled his own coffers, in which he has shown his tact over his fellow men in procuring a fortune; he may be well noted as an extra of the age, possessing talents, in his way that few men have.

Thomas Barnum, in l68l, was appointed by the town to keep decorum during the exercise on the Sabbath, and at other public meetings, and to keep a small stick to moderately correct the disorderly. In l67l, he was put down in the list of estates at 40 lbs. of commonage.

Barnham has three coats of arms.

CONNECTICUT GENEALOGY, Vol. II, pages 442 & 443:
BARNUM
An investigation of the English ancestry of the Barnum family of America justifies the belief that the immigrant ancestor was son or grandson of Sir Martin & Judith (Calthorpe) Barnum. His Mother (or grandmother) was daughter of Sir Francis Barnham, knight of Hollingbourne, was either stepbrother or uncle and the wife of Francis Bacon (Lord Bacon) great Lord Chancellor & Viscount was either lst or 2nd cousin. The alabaster monument of Sir Martin Barnham which stands in All Saints Church, Hollingbourne Hall, England, is thus inscribed: "Sacred to the memory of Sir Martin Barnham.

Sprung from the old Southampton family of Barnhams, who married Ursula, daughter of Robert Rudstone, of Bouton, Nonchelsey, and had 2 daughters & l son. On her death, he married Judith, the daughter of Sir Martin Calthorpe, Lord Mayor of London, by whom he had 5 sons & 5 daughters. He was a man on every side of Gentle birth, most happy in the extreme piety of his life & death alike; on whom God of the boundless riches of His mercy poured (piled upon him) of this world's gifts of nature, Grace & Honor, good measure, pressed down, shaken together, & running over. He died l2th Dec. l6l0, aged 60 years."

The name in Fairfield & Norwalk is spelled Barnum but it may have been originally Burnham or Burnam, all of which are English names. In Burke's "Encyclopedia of heraldry" is given the name Barnam & a coat of arms as follows: Sable, a cross between 4 crescents, argent.

(l) Thomas Barnum, immigrant ancestor, was one of the first 8 settlers of the town of Danbury, Ct. They  purchased the land from the Indians & commenced the preparation for settlement in the year l684, and all were living there in the Spring of l685. Before this, however, there is mention of Thomas Barnum on a Fairfield book of record as follows: "28 Feb. l673, Tho: Barnum hath by purchase of John Crump l parcel of land at Maximus, being in quantity by estimation three-quarters of an acre more or less." The next record is in Norwalk dated April 30, l678, and another at the same time says the plantation granted to Thomas Barnum was "3 acres lying by the land said Thomas Barnum purchased of John Rayment." Hall's history of Norwalk says "Thomas Barnum of Fairfield, had a grant before l663." The same history gives the assessment of Mr. Barnum's estate in lands in that town in l67l and l687 as 40 pounds. At a town meeting in Norwalk, Nov. 8, l68l, he was "appointed for to oversee and to keep Decorum amongst the youth in times of exercise on the Sabboth and other Publique meetings; and the Town doe impower him if he see any disorderly, for to keep a small stick to correct such with; only he is desired to do it with clemency; and if any are incoridgable in such disorder, he is to present them either to their parents or masters; and if they do not reclaime them, then to present such to authority."

He married (second) Sarah, widow of John Hurd, Senior of Stratford. Her first husband died in l68l. She was the daughter of John Thompson, the first of the name in Stratford. Thomas Barnum died in Danbury, Dec. 26, l695, about 70 years old, leaving no will. His estate, which amounted to 330 pounds 4 shillings 4 pence, was divided among "5 sons & 5 daughters, the eldest son to have a double portion." His widow Sarah, returned to Stratfield in Stratford, and died there in June l7l8, aged 76 years. Children, the first 4 recorded in Fairfield: Thomas July 9, l663; John Feb. 24, l677; Hannah, Oct. 4, l680; Ebenezer May 29, l682; Francis, Richard, 4 daughters whose names are not known.

THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST, Vol. 65:
The centennial sermon, by the Rev. Thomas Robbins of the First Congregational Church in l80l, states that Danbury was founded in l684-l685 by eight families-all but one from Norwalk. These families were Samuel and James Benedict, Thomas Taylor, Thomas Barnum, James Beebe from Stratford, Francis Bushnell, John Hoyt and Judah Gregory (John W. Barber, CONNECTICUT HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS...[New Haven l836] pp. 362-37l). These men, who were all "of Danbury" (or of Paquiage, the early name for the town) sold their dwelling houses in Norwalk between 27 Dec. l684 and l June l687 (Norwalk LR l:243-244, 259).

Tho: Barnum hath by purchase of John Crump one parcel of land at Maximuss, being in quantity by estimation three quarters of an acre more or less;" his next record is at Norwalk, dated Apr. 30, l678, and another at the same time says the plantation granted to Thomas Barnum was "three acres lying by the land said Thomas purchased of John Ragment;" at a town meeting at Norwalk, Nov. 8, l68l, he was "appointed for to oversee and to keep good Decorum amongst the youth in times of exercise on the Sabbath and other Publique meetings," etc.; removed to Danbury, Conn., where he was one of the first eight settlers of the town, who purchased the land from the Indians and commenced the preparation for settlement in l684, and all were living there
