William owned 186 acres of land worth about $4,660 when he died. William's gravestone can be found (but broken in 2 pieces) in the cemetery about 3 miles South of Sciota, Illinois. He gravestone reads: "William Twichel Died Sept 25 1864 Aged 66 yrs 11ms 7ds O ye young ye gay and proud You must die and wear a shroud For lime will rob you of your bloom And death will drag you to the tomb". Next to William is his wife Annie Maria's gravestone. Another gravestone with Amanda is also in the same location, most likely their daughter. Another small gravestone (broken) in the same location was found. It read "W. T. Jr. 1834" It could also be 1831. The four gravestones were witnessed June 24, 1995.

Joshua TWITCHELL

DAR PATRIOT INDEX
TWITCHELL, Joshua, born 11-13-1750 died 1811 married Sarah Miller, Pvt. Ma.
ebt: Different death date than I show. He died in Ohio as that's where the probate records are.

SIXTEEN HUNDRED LINES TO PILGRIMS
Joshua Twitchell (Nov. 13, 1750-...1811) married Jan. 13, 1781 Sarah Miller.
Thomas Twitchell (Sept. 29, 1722-Feb. 25, 1810) married Dec. 31, 1747 Susannah Stedman (-Dec. 12, 1809)
Ephraim Twitchell (Oct. 24, 1695-July 25, 1775) married about 1721 Sarah Millen (-Aug. 28, 1725).
Joseph Twitchell (before l640-Oct. 24, 1710) married 1670 Lydia Johnson (-April 27, 1725).
Benjamin Twitchell (Pilgrim) (June 10, 1599- 1675/6) married 1630 Mary Riggs.

Joshua served in the military on April 24, 1775 in Westborough, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Joshua enlisted in the Continental army on April 24, 1775 under the command of Captain Seth Morse. Captain Morse's militia was in Col. Ward's regiment. Joshua is recorded as serving for 3 months and 15 days. Later Joshua apparently re-enlisted, this time under Captain Brigham's company, Col. Cushing's regiment. "With the command he proceeded to Fishkill, June 7, 1778, and served during the remainder of the war. It is stated by his descendents that he was at the battle of Bunker Hill." His name appears in the Descriptive list of men raised in Worcester County for the term of nine months, "from the time of their arrival at Fishkill." According to the diary of Rev. Ebenezer Parkman, however, Joshua may have deserted for a time, perhaps after his first enlistment. The diary reads: "Paul Biglow comes with Joshua Twitchell & Fortunatus Miller. The two latter being Deserters: to see Gen'l Washington's Proclamation of Pardon to such: And P. Biglow would for a large Reward, go in Miller's stead."

Death information source: Gallia, Ohio death records. Joshua Twitchell Sr. Estate, 1816. Joshua's death was at least before October 30, 1816 when Joshua Jr., his son, appeared before the court to administer his father's estate. The administration papers indicate Joshua Sr. was from Salisbury, Gallia County, Ohio. Holliston, Mass. vital records give parents of Joshua as Thomas and Susannah Twitchell. Joshua purchased land in New Hampshire (Cheshire?, NH land deed 3676 pt. 15 vol 14), Vermont (Windham, VT land deed 6725, pt. 2 vol 4.), and Ohio (Meigs or Gallia, OH).

Several Twitchell families left the Fitzwilliam, NH and Vermont areas in 1813 for the 'Ohio country'. Joshua and his family, Jonas Twitchell and his two sons and their families made the trip. Another Joshua Twitchell probably did not make the migration at that time, since family sources suggest he was involved in the War of 1812 -- but he could have. He shows up in Fayette, Ohio in the 1820 census.

Sarah MILLER

Sarah was baptized on October 23, 1794. There is a marriage record cited in IFI of a Sarah Twitchell and Elias Greenleaf married in Orange Twp, Meigs, Ohio on July 9, 1818. Could this be the same Sarah Miller Twitchell? Did she remarry after Joshua's death in 1816?

WESTBOROUGH VITAL STATISTICS also lists a Sarah Miller, daughter of Solomon & Mary Miller born Oct. l9, l766. She is listed along with the other children in this family group. Do we have the wrong birthdate & place for her?
