OB
L.C. TWITCHELL DEAD
---------------------------------------
A Veteran of the Civil War and Long a Resident of Morgan County, Died Monday, June 13, 1927
___________________
Leander Curtis Twitchell was born in Illinois November 16, 1842. He was married to Sarah F. Pendell in Illinois in 1866. Thirteen children were born to them - four are dead and nine are living. The living children are: Anna Mae Morris, of Proctor; Leander W. Twitchell, of Marcelline, Linn County; R.A. Twitchell, of Montreal, Mo., Mary Knoyer of Chetopa, Kans.; Willie McLaughlin, Everett, Kans.; John Twitchell, of Boonville; Walter Twitchell of New Franklin, Mo.; George A. Twitchell, at home place; Birdie Weber, Chetopa, Kansas.
Shortly after his marriage Mr. Twitchell moved from Illinois to Marcelline, Linn County, Missouri. There they buried four children. In 1894, the family moved to Morgan County, settling five miles northwest of Versailles. The family lived in the city the first year and since that time have lived on their farm.
In his younger days Mr. Twitchell joined the Baptist church but after moving to his farm in Morgan county and there being no Baptist church handy he united with the Church of God at Antioch and died a member of that society. It was said of Mr. Twitchell that few laymen knew the Bible so well as he. Mr. Twitchell served nearly four years in the Union army during the Civil War. After the war his eyesight commenced to fail him and he was almost blind during the last twentyfive or thirty years his sight has been almost gone. Although in his 85th year he was as straight as an Indian and he was a very limber, nimble man for one of his age. He was a member of the G.A.R., a soldiers' organization that has almost disappeared because death has decimated its ranks.
Mr. Twitchell took sick April 1, of this year and died June 13 at 10 o'clock in the morning, the day being Monday. The remains were taken to St. Catherine Cemetery, near Marceline, Wednesday for burial. W.F. Kidwell, the Versailles undertaker, having taken the body in a hearse, accompanied by four or five cars of relatives and friends.
Mr. Twitchell had many friends in Morgan County. He was known as a man who tried to treat everybody right. He was a good citizen and a good neighbor who will be missed in his community. His death was the first in his family in 52 years.

LAND: Deed of sale; 21 Sep 1895; Versailles, Morgan Co, MO; L C and Sarah F Twitchell to D P Moore of Linn Creek, Camden Co, MO; Courthouse, Camden Co, MO;

Deed data: L C and Sarah F Twitchell of Versailles sold to D P Moore of Linn Creek {deed incorrectly has Linn Creek in
Morgan Co, but it is in Camden Co} for $300 on 21 Sep 1995. Land description: The South half of the SE quarter of Section three, and the South half of the East quarter of Section ten all in the Township of 38 of Range 16 containing
160 acres more or less.

From Emma Mae's family group sheet: Leander and Sarah came in a covered wagon from McDonough Co, IL to Chariton Co, MO. They settled on a 160 acre farm. In 1894 they moved to Morgan Co, MO. Leander enlisted in the Union Army. On his discharge and muster roll sheets it says Nov 21, 1861 his request for pension states Nov 21, 1861 at Quincy, MO for 3 yrs. One pension sheet lists Nov 16, 1861. I'm sure it was Nov 21, 1861. He was discharged June 14, 1865 at Jefferson, Benton Barracks, MO.

He was baptised at a first Baptist church. He was married by John K McGinnis, Methodist Minister. He was buried first in New Garden Cemetery in St. Catherine, MO and later moved to Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Marceline

From Discharge papers: 5'9", light complexion, dark eyes, dark hair

CAUSE OF DEATH: Bright's disease, age 84 years 6 months 7 days

From Marceline, Missouri history, p 307:
Leander left McDonough Co, IL on his nineteenth birthday to enlist in the Union Army in West Quincy, IL. His unit suffered casualities and capture at Jackson, Mississippi. He was sent to Richmond, Virginia for prisoner of war confinement. A year later the same unit was again fighting for the Union and again captured, this time at Tilton, Georgia. This time he was sent to the infamous Andersonville Prison. Having survived his first confinement, he was determined to survive this one, too. He knew they would be searched and anything of value taken from them. He arranged to trade his new boots for some worn ones, and tucked a twenty dollar gold piece into a hole in the boot's sole. He used this money to buy food in the prison. He contracted scurvy and nearly died during his capture. He described Andersonville as filthy, very unsanitary and terribly boring.

In 1866 he married Sarah Frances Pendell at home near Macomb, Illinois. They moved west to the Linn-Chariton county line of Missouri. The nearest town was St. Catherine, about a days ride from the homestead. The four children that did not survive infancy were buried at New Garden Cemetery near St. Catherine.

Anna Maria DAVIS

1850 McDonough Co., Illinois census states she was born in NY.

Annie Maria's gravestone reads: "Annie Maria wife of William Twichel Born Sept. ?0th 1805 Died Ma? ??th 1852". It is located in section c (West central part) of Spring Creek Cemetery, Emmet Twp., McDonough Co., Ill. It is about 3 miles south of Sciota, Ill. It is positioned next to 3 other gravestones: William Twichel, Amanda, and W.T., Jr. Annie's gravestone at Spring Creek Cemetery, is well worn (partial dates readable) and is in one piece.

Annie Maria Davis was born in NY (according to census). The Davis, and Twitchell families dwelt close to each other in Meigs, Ohio. Annie married William, & shortly afterward they left Ohio to purchase Government land in McDonough county. Not much is known of Annie. She was a second cousin of P.T. Barnum of Barnum & Baily Circus fame, through her mother. Annie's children shared in the distribution of her brother, Matthew's, estate.

The following sets forth the contents of a xerox copy of the (hand written) administration account of Matthew S. Barnum, showing the Davis family participation in that distribution, (16 April 1894):

Eli DAVIS

In A HISTORY OF DANBURY, CONNECTICUT, p. 24l, states "In l799 Zar Dibble and Eli Davis owned all the land in the centre of Bethel, as far down as Little Fields, now known as Nashville, some sixty acres in all. Dibble wanted to sell out and move to Ballston, N.Y., and proposed to divide the land to accommodate Purchasers." His own dwelling was on the west road, and his hat shop was on the east side of his farm. No other buildings were on this plot of land. Phineas Taylor ,P. T. Barnum 's grandfather, bought all the home land, leaving about one acre with the house and barns, which was purchased by Timothy Taylor .About half an acre with the shop was sold to Lemon Starr . He fitted up the shop with a little addition for a shoemaker, who resided in part of it. Seven years later Starr sold the shop and a small plot of ground to Elias Taylor , who put another addition on the north side for a family residence, and converted the shoe shop into a hat shop again. It was the same place before mentioned, now the site of Ferry's Block. Taylor, being a very enterprising man, cut the land into parts to suit customers, mostly in small plots. He had two roads cut through the land to accommodate dwelling-houses, shops, etc. In 1817 Taylor bought a house on the northeast corner of the plot, and lived there until his death in1837 .

A lot of information I have for Eli Davis & his ancestors come from Theron Davis who has spent years researching the Davis family.

Theron Davis states that Eli died at his son's, Eugene B. Davis, West Columbia, West Virginia.

Theron Davis:
Saratoga County Deeds
Vol. 4, p. 225, 15 Feb 1805 Edmond Davis of Ballston mortgaged for 75 cents to Eli Davis. Land in the South moriety of the North part of Lot #6 of the smaller lots into which lot #2 of the subdivision of lot # 13 in the 17th Allotment of the Kay. Patent. Containing 50 Acres of land. Witness: Samuel Cook, Semeon Rieler Recorded 1815 by Eli Davis of Northumberland

Book H, p. 390, 17 June 1810 Eli Davis & Thurza, his wife, of Northumberland, Saratoga County, sold to Harmon Gansevoort & Leonard H. Gansevoort of Northumberland for $700.00. Land being the North part of lot #6 of the smaller lots into which lot #2 of the subdivision of lot #13 of the 17th Allotment of the General Petition of the Kay. Patent. (Legal description of property follows.)

The next muster-roll, formerly in possession of Lieutenant SHAFOR (of the Militia), is dated May 31st (1813 for Fort Meigs, OH). Upon it appear the names of James CARLISLE, Winthrop EMERSON, Thomas SPENCER, Benjamin STONE, John WELLS, and Warner WYNN. Eli DAVIS was fourth sergeant.
+++++++++++++++++++
Theron Davis states that Eli died at his son's, Eugene B. Davis, West Columbia, West Virginia.

The 1820 census for Orange Township, Meigs County, Ohio shows the following for household Eli Davis listing on page 113A:
4 Males under the age of 10
2 Males age 10 - 16
1 Male age 16 - 26
1 Male age greater than 45
1 Female under age of 10
1 Female age 10 - 16
1 Female age 16 - 26
1 Female age 26 - 45
The census also indicates that 7 males are engaged in agriculture and that 2 of them are over 16 years of age.

In the probate records show that Andrew Comstock was made guardian of Eli Davis in Dec 1787. He was also made guardian of Anna (Eli's sister) in Apr/May of 1786. The grave of Andrew Comstock was found in the Congregational Church Cemetery at Bethel, CT indicating that he died 07 Mar 1789. Anna reapplied to the court and chose Zar Dibble as her guardian in Apr 1789. [It is noteworthy that Anna's sister Lucy married Zar Dibble in Sept of 1786.]

[Note by Theron Davis: As a result of some study, I get the impression that Eli and his brother-in-law Zar Dibble, sold their property in the center of Bethel, CT to Phineas Taylor (He would be the father-in-law of Eli's wifes' first cousin - once removed) in about 1800 and they both moved not long afterward to Ballston Spa, Saratoga Co., NY. I don't believe Eli stayed in NY very long (although it is probable that his son Eliakim was born there in Jan of 1807) before moving to Ohio and Illinois as outlined by Uncle Doc below).]

The 1820 census for Orange Township, Meigs County, Ohio shows the following for household

Eli Davis listing on page 113A:
4 Males under the age of 10 - I believe that would be Almon, Armon, Almond, and Darius.
2 Males age 10 - 16 - I believe that to be Benedict and Eliakim
1 Male age 16 - 26 - I believe that to be Barnum
1 Male age greater than 45 - Believed to be Eli Davis
1 Female under age of 10 - Believe to be Elizabeth
1 Female age 10 - 16 - Unknown
1 Female age 16 - 26 - Unknown
1 Female age 26 - 45 - Thirza Barnum Davis
(Eugene B. and Norman W. had not yet been born)
Number of each (this) family: 12
The census also indicates that 7 males are engaged in agriculture and that 2 of them are over 16 years of age.

In attempting to reconstruct the migrations of Eli Davis, the following is approximate:
Bethel, CT - 1774 to about 1801
Saratoga County, NY - 1801 to about 1808
Ohio - 1808 to about 1830
McDonough County, IL - 1830 to 1853
West Columbia, WV - 1853 to 1857

The names of Eli's children are from Betty Chastain who is a Twitchel family researcher.

Tirze (Thursa) BARNUM

Vital Records have her listed as: Tirze, child of Matthew Jr & Mary, b Sept 5, 1784

Thirza Barnum was the daughter of Mathew Barnum, the second cousin of Phineas Taylor (P.T.) Barnum. Mathew, Thirza's half-brother, inherited a portion of P.T.'s estate and when he died, some of his estate was left to Davis descendants of Thirza (Barnum) Davis. I recall Mollie (Davis) VanArtsdale, my great-aunt telling me that her father called a certain rocking chair in her house "The Barnum Estate", for she had purchased it with her inheritance from Mathew S. Barnum. A note that came with a check for $40 said: "Enclosed please find a certified check for the amount of your distributive share, as one of the heirs of the estate of Mathew S. Barnum late of Sharon (CT), deceased."   by Theron Davis

A further verification is Mary Jane's marriage certificate (27 April 1843) which states she is over 18, implying a birthdate before April 27, 1825. Since William Twitchell and Annie Davis were married Jan. 14, 1824 in Meigs, Ohio & did not leave for Ill. until 1831, it is assumed that Mary Jane was born in Meigs Co., Ohio.

She was buried in Chadsey-Gay Cemetery, Rushville, Schuyler County, IL. Gravestone witnessed November 4, 1995 reads: "Mary J. wife of E.W.L. Gay DIED Nov 28, 1880 aged 55 yrs, 9 mos & 4 days." Edwin Twitchell was able to locate Mary Jane's gravestone but could find no other stones of the family in the area. There was one broken marker nearby which read "Children of E.W.L. and M.J. Gay". The small cemetery is in very poor condition, with briars and weeds covering the entire plot. It is located in the middle of a farm with the nearest access road over 300 yds. away.

McDonough county marriage certificate #435 has "Jane twitchell" The cemetery records would have us believe that Mary and 5 of her children died within a 2 yr. period between 1880 and 1882.
