Williams Families

Notes

Thomas Eltonhead,

The website on the Norris Family in England has another generation between John & Thomas with a John Eltonhead married to Alice Bettargh as being the father of John instead of Thomas. I base my information on a genealogy chart made by Richard Eltonhead in 1669 & submitted to the Lancashire Visitation.

Thomas is named in a record of 1365.

Henry Eltonhead,

from Steven D. Norris website
Henry le Norreys of Daresbury, Eltonhead, Eccleston, Rainhill & Formby, Lancashire; who became known as Henry Eltonhead.
b. ca. 1245; d. after 1320. Henry le Norreys was the first of the family of Eltonhead to carry or be given the surname of Eltonhead. His descendants vacillated between the name le Norreys and de Eltonhead during the next generation, but eventually dropped the name "le Norreys." Henry le Norreys was married to Margery de Ireland, the sister of Maud, who was married to Henry's brother Gilbert. Margery was the daughter of Beatrice and Robert de Ireland. Robert de Ireland had been granted lands in Eccleston, Rainhill, and Sutton, (the homage of "William called Samson") by William de Daresbury in about 1250. These lands passed to Margery and her sister Maud. Henry le Norreys and Margery as the senior couple between themselves and Gilbert le Norreys and his wife Maud received Daresbury Manor, Cheshire, where he was the Lord of Daresbury in 1291 (by the appellation of Henry de Eltonhead). He also had the royalty of Over Walton, Cheshire, and the lands of Sutton, Eccleston, and Rainhill in Lancashire by right of his wife. In 1291 Henry de Eltonhead (as he was known) gave land in Blackley Carr to Roger Banti. It lay next to the road from Sutton to Parre, Lancashire. Richard de Eltonhead (Henry's son) was a witness. Henry le Norreys represented Eltonhead in 1302. Henry and Robert de Eltonhead (his uncle, brother of Alan) are named among the Lords of Sutton in 1302, and Henry and Alan (his cousin, son of Robert) in 1313. In 1319 Henry was claiming lands in Sutton from Alan (his cousin, 111.142.1), and in 1320 he was demanding the guardianship of Alan's son and heir from Ellen the widow and others, alleging that Alan had held Sutton of him by knight's service. It was also claimed by John de Eltonhead (111.141.4, Henry's son) that Robert de Eltonhead (Henry's uncle, 111.142) had unjustly disseized Henry de Eltonhead (this person) of his lands in Sutton. Henry de Eltonhead had sons Alan (the heir), Thomas, Richard, and John.
