Hannah Christian

DIED GIVING BIRTH TO 3RD GIRL, JUDITH ANN HANNAH WOODS.

REMINISCENCES: Notes of Edna Mae Russell, great-niece of Hannah Christian Woods, indicated that Hannah had three daughters, as named, and that she died in childbirth with her third child. Subsequently, her sister, Martha Jane Christian, volunteered to care for her sister's children, so she married Joseph Woods and they raised Hannah's children and three of their own. (Actually Joseph and Martha Jane had four children of their own--OMC.)

CENSUS: 1860 U. S. Census, Morgan Co., MO. Moreau Twp., M653, Roll 636, p. 154.
Hannah's children would have been Catherine, 17; Martha, 15; and Judith, 13; Martha's and Joseph's children were Mary, 9; John, 7; Phoebe, 3; and Willliam, 4 months.

Married by Buford Allee, J. P.; Marriage Book 1, p. , Morgan Co. Courthouse, Versailles, MO.

If Hannah died in childbirth with her third child, she must have died about 1847 (if the census date for Judith is more or less accurate). Joseph Woods bought 40 acres of land from Charles Allison, in Morgan Co. on Moreau Creek on 23 Jan 1845, so her death probably occurred in Morgan Co. That may have been part of Morgan Co. which became Moniteau Co. in 1845. Edna Mae Russell's notes indicate that she was buried at Big Rock Cemetery in Barnett, MO.

Judith Leake

NICKNAME: (OR NAME KNOWN BY) - JUDA.
ONE SOURCE GIVES DATE OF BIRTH AS 17 JUL 1749/50. JUDITH LEAKE AND JOHN CHRISTIAN "B" WERE 1ST COUSINS ONE GENERATION REMOVED

THE LEAKE FAMILY AND CONNECTING LINES, by George Warren Chappelear, 1932
States that Judith Leake was the daughter of Walter & Judith Mask. Judith Leake married John Christian in Goochland May 9, 1771 Douglas Register. In Walter Leake's will he does refer to his daughter Judith as Judith Christian. Her wedding date appears to be a generation out of the timeframe of her siblings. Some family records state her father's name was John though they don't give the source.

Peter L. Christian

MAY HAVE DIED IN MORGAN CO., MO.

Edna Mae Russell wrote the following about Peter L. Christian: Peter L. (L must have been for "Leake.") His birth date, marriage date and spouse must not be known.

By letters from Christian Family Chronicles, which James L. Christian has already printed in the Chronicles.
Peter caught cold, fever and chills followed, and at one writing, "he was very low and it was doubted he would recover. He died in 1839, perhaps May."

He must have married in VA and had a son, Peter, for he is mentioned in John F.'s Probate Court Proof of Will as a son of Peter L. Christian, April 2, 1849. If Peter L. died soon after May 27, 1839 after the families arrived here, he would have had to have been married and borne a son in VA. (Divorces were seldom heard of in those days--Edna Mae.) (I have been surprised at the number of divorces I have found in early court records.---Ora Mae)

He was always called "Jack." It was reported by Edna Mae Russell that he spent many early years caring for his orphaned nieces and nephews, and therefore married rather late in life to a woman many years his junior.

Probate records are found in folders filed alphabetically in the Probate Court, in the Moniteau Co., Court House in California, MO. His brother, Samuel M. Christian, was named executor of the estate and guardian of the minor children. The children were placed in the homes of older sisters, and various relatives and friends. Mary Ellen and Robert B. Christian lived in the home of their Uncle Samuel for a time.

Joseph Hiram D. Christian

SOURCES: A family group sheet given to Ora Mae Crane by Edna Mae Russell indicated that the information about Joseph Hiram's family had been given to her by Virginia Tucker Madaus, whose husband was a descendant of Emily Alice Christian, Joseph's 10th child. Also, Harry Williams and Frances Coe helped Edna Mae by searching the Roberts Cemetery in Johnson County.

BIRTH: Family records gave Joseph's birthplace as Lynchyburg, Va. No confirming evidence as to the birthplace has been found by this researcher.

REMINISCENCES: Edna Mae Russell wrote: "I never heard Mother say much about Joseph Hiram. I know that his son, Samuel M. Christian, was called "Little Sam". He was the sixth son. In those times travel was by horse, and Warrensburg seemed a long way off from California, MO. It is about 70 miles. Once we received a postal card from Lon M. Hall from Sedalia. I can't remember what it said, only he would like to see Mother, and he signed it Cousin Lon. I asked Mother who he was, and she told me he had married her cousin, Louise Christian, one of Uncle Joe's girls."

MARRIAGE: Married by Green Clay, J. P.; Marriage Book 1, p. 49, Moniteau Co. Court House, California, MO.

DEATH: No definite death date was found for Joseph Hiram, but it is believed that he was buried in the Roberts Cemetery in Holden, MO.

William Preston Christian

FAMILY DATA: Information on this family was supplied by William's descendants: Gay Scally, Loy Flick, Mrs. Lester Pedigo--using family records, census records, Fannin Co. marriages at the courthouse.

MARRIAGE: Married by F.T. McKinney, J. P.; Marriage Book 1, p.44, Moniteau Co. Courthouse, California, MO.

Ora Mae Crane did not take time to search completely for his family members since they had become scattered widely in Oklahoma and Texas. They proved to be quite elusive, and time was limited.

John Leake

Some family information says he is the father of Judith Leake who married John Christian. I need to do more research on this.
