Aubrey Franklin Hill

Notes from Pat Woestman:
Obit from the Houston, Mo. Newspaper - "Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel for A.F. Hill, 9l one of the city's best-known citizens who served 8 years as mayor-the longest stint in the top city job since the city's incorporation. Mr. Hill spent virtually all of his adult life in business, first as an automobile salesman and later as a partner in Ford automobile agencies in Houston, and 45 years in the real estatebusiness. His service in city government included 6 years as a city council member in addition to his 8 years in the mayor's seat. There is a long list of achievements: Mr. Hill was one of the founders of the Houston Memorial Airport and was a long-time aviation enthusiast and pilot, owning several airplanes during his life-time. He was one of the first pilots to participate in the "fly-in" breakfast project in which airplanes were flown to various airports in the area by pilots who enjoyed a morning meal together. The Hill airplane was put to use many times in behalf of city business. He was a World War I veteran, serving overseas; a member of the First Baptist Church; a 50-yr. member of the Masonic Lodge in Houston; a charter member of the Houston Lions Club; a former president of the Houston Country Club; an active member in the Chamber of Commerce and various organizations. He maintained a great love for music throughout his life. Mr. Hill played the guitar in a musical group and also played the piano and 'fiddle'. He was an accomplished dancer and old-timers still like to recall his starring role as an entertainer in a Lions Club musial program which proved to be popular throughout the area. As a real estate dealer, he handled many large transactions but in later years confined his efforts to appraisal for government agencies. When he was first elected mayor in l95l he announced several goals-improvement to entrances to Houston, improved parking facilities, the establishment of a city park which ultimately ended as Houston's attractive Emmett Kelly Park. Aubrey Frank Hill was born Sept. l5, l894 in Camden County, Mo. & died March 7, l986 at Texas county Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was the son of James Robert Hill and Catherine Jane Williams Hill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. One brother, John of KC, Ks. survives. The family moved to Oklahoma where Aubrey attended school. He joined the U.S. Army and served overseas in World War I. After the war he purchased property at Cucyrus and later moved to Houston. Survivors include his wife, Geneva, of the home; 2 daughters, Erma Helen Withers, Houston, & Muriel Newman of Kwajalein, Marshall Islands; 3 grandchildren, l great-granddaughter, 2 step-daughters & 5 step grandchildren. The Rev.Bill Carter, Success, conducted the services. Burial was in Pinelawn Cemetery under the direction of Evans."

Per conversation with Geneva Hill 6/l7/l994, Aubrey married Bessie Kreuger twice; had either an illegitimate or previous marriage which produced a daughter named Mildred whom Aubrey would not recognize.

Nathan Spraggins

Nathan is not listed on the 1850 census but a William is. The birthdate is 2 yrs. younger than Mary. However on the 1860 census Nathan & Mary are listed together with the same birth year so they could possibly be twins.

George W. Hill

Notes by Pat Woestman:
The information on James Arthur Hill and George W. Hill (l2/3l/l880) was given to me over the phone by George W. Hill Jr., son of George W. Hill, Sr. George Sr. died June l, l970. He lived in Cashmire.Washington.

Per Geneva Hill's conversation on 6/l7/l994 she told me that "Aubrey's nephew George W. Hill lived at 5840 Thompson Creek Road, Applegate, Oregon 97530. I'm not sure that George W. was actually a Jr., or which of the brothers or sisters he was a child of.

The 1910 Lynn Lane Twp, Tulsa, Ok. census shows George W. Hill with his wife Renna Kays & his 3 children - Warner (James Warner), Opal & Ruby. In the same township are his parents. His brother, Willoughby is listed as William B. on the 1910 census for Adair, Mayes Co., Ok.

The 1920 Mayes Co., Ok. census shows an additional child George. Opal's birth indicates they were probably in Ok. by 1907.

In 1930 he is on the Craig Co., Ok. census with child Gordon added. His wife is named Irene. The marriage records of Moniteau Co. call her Irene. Her nickname was Rennie.

James Arthur Hill

Notes by Pat Woestman.

Per conversation with George W. Hill 8/22/94 he stated that James Arthur Hill (8/l/l878) died in an automobile accident in Riolta, Ca., in l936. He was then living in Fontana, Ca. He would have been 58 years old. Would be in l936 so there would be no Social Security records.

Land Records in Camden County, Mo. "This Indenture made on the 27th day of March, l903 between James A. Hill and Ethel Hill his wife of the County of Camden and state of Mo., party of the first part and Roland Hughs of Jackson County, Mo. - sum $l,600.00.
