Williams Families

Notes

John Wesley Williams

Sometime in the early l900's the family moved to Oklahoma. Myrtle's parents were down there working on a ranch. Several family members joined them including Myrtle & John Williams. Myrtle & John didn't stay long though because they had 2 children die while there & my Dad, Joseph Williams, said they decided Okla. was too unhealthy for their family so they moved back to Moniteau Co., Mo.

He was killed on Christmas Day as a passenger on a bus headed for Kansas City. A train struck the bus at a railroad crossing in Sedalia, Mo. "California Democrat". His children were all placed in various homes of relatives. Glen, the youngest son, was placed with a farm family in Iowa. When I was a child growing up, my Dad never wanted to celebrate Christmas because it reminded him of the death of his Father.

William Jefferson (Jeffrey) Morrow

Grandma Kate Hill Morrow was married before she married Jeff Morrow & had a boy named Bert Jackson. He was a frail child & they were virtually homeless. She prayed God would send Bertie a Father & her a husband. Then she met Jeff Morrow. He had a boy Willie Morrow & a girl Rose by a previous marriage. Willie's wife's name was Betty. He died of TB as a young man. Bert Jackson was killed in an accident as a young man. He was helping to unload sand and he was buried in it. When they dug him out, his watch was still ticking. Grandma Kate Morrow died of cancer of the uterus.

Glen Morrow Williams lived with his Grandma & Grandpa Morrow for acouple of years as a young child.

Jeff & Kate Morrow lived on a ranch in Oklahoma at the turn of the Century. Kate was a cook & Jeff was an all-around ranch hand. At some point they moved to southeast Kansas in the Chetopa/Coffeyville area. On the l920 Census they are living in Kansas City, Kansas & he is working as a laborer in a soap factory. I believe my Dad said he worked with Colgate, Palmolive, Peat. At the time of his death, their daughter, Myrtle Morrow Williams Wilbur wasliving with them.

I had been told by the Mitchell family that when the Morrow family set out for Oklahoma by wagon, they were accompanied by at least l of the Mitchell boys who was a cowboy. That was how their youngest daughter, Grace, met Homer Mitchell. I'm not sure if their daughter Myrtle & her new husband John Williams went with them at the time or if they went down later. If they went with them, it would place them in Oklahoma in l9l0. The John & Myrtle Williams family lived close by though, for they lost 2 children to disease & they are buried close to Tulsa, Okla. as that is the general area where they lived. John & Myrtle Williams returned to Mo. after they buried their second child. The Morrows, however, stayed behind.

EDWIN AND ELENDER WEBBER CHILES HICKMAN, by Hope A. Hilton, l967 pg. 49
Revolutionary War Pension Claim
"I was born on the l5th day of Oct. l762, in the County of Albermarle of the State of Va. I have now, however, no record of my age, but to the best of my knowledge I am 7l years of age. In l780 I was living in the County of Surry of the State of N.C. In that year I volunteered for a tour of duty of 3 months. I was elected ensign in the company of Captain William Meredith and served this tour in the regiment of Colonel Martin Armstrong and Brigade of General Griffith Rutherford. We marched from Richmond the County Seat of Surry to the River Pedes. I was there awaited the arrival of Gen. Gates army. After the army came up I was with others the night before Gates' defeat detached under the command of Col. Elisha Isaacs to reinforce Gen. Thomas Sumter. I was in the engagement in which Sumter was defeated the Friday after Gates' defeat which took place on the Sat. evening. After I had served this tour I went home but did not receive any written discharge. In the close of l780 I think it was I volunteered and served another tour of 2 months as an ensign under Edwin Hickman as Captain. In the regiment of Col. Robert Lanier, we were in service for these 2 months against the Tories on the Yadkin River during which time the Tories took the town of Richmond in the County of Surry where I was living. I also served as a volunteer and ensign during the year l78l under Edwin Hickman as Captain in Col. John Armstrong's regiment and General Pickens' brigade first in guarding military stores for Salisbury, N.C. to River Dan. I then joined Gen. Green's army and was with him in the battle at Allemance and at Whitsills Mills on the reedy ford of Dan River and was with him also at the Battle of Guilford Court House.

"After this I volunteered and served as a private for another 3 months under Captain Edwin Hickman in Col. John Armstrong's regiment and was with Gen. Green's Army at battle at the Eutaw Springs but was not in the battle for my brother who was a captain of the company to which I belonged was then sick and I was sent to nurse him. I myself was then taken sick, and was not able to serve further but think that I am entitled to pay for the 3 months and l0 months. I live now in Davidson County in the State of Tenn. I have lived there ever since the Revolution. I never received any written discharge."
Thomas Hickman

Served with his brother's unit in the Rev. War in Surry Co., N.C.
