Edwin Conway came from Worcester,
England about 1640 and appears in the Northampton County, Virginia,
records June, 1642, as “Mr. Edwyn CONAWAY, Clarke of this Com in
the County of Northampton.” (He was the 3rd clerk of Northampton
Co., Va.) His landed estate aggregated over 10,000 acres.
A family tradition states that two brothers named Conway related to the
Marquis of Hertford, were exiled to America for political reasons &
came to Virginia. Sir Edward Conway & Captain Thomas Conway
were members of the Virginia Company of London, 1609-1620. There
are several deeds & papers at the Lancaster County Courthouse
bearing the family arms:
Arms: Sable on a bend argent cotised ermine, a rose gules, between two annulets of the last
Crest: A Moor’s head side faced ppr, banded around the temples argent and azure
Motto: Fide et amore
Therefore it is believed that our Edwin Conway is descended from Sir
Edward Conway of Ragley, County Warwick who was knighted in 1596 for
the sacking of Cadiz. Edward Conway was made a baron in 1624
& viscount in 1627.
One of his great great-granddaughters became the mother of James
Madison, 4th President of the United States. James Madison &
his parents are buried at Montpelier
Another prominent family connection is Edwin Conway’s grandson,
Edwin Conway III, married Anne Ball, step-sister of Mary Ball,
Mother of George Washington.
As you can see, the Conway family was quite prominent & influential
in Colonial Virginia. The Conway family are maternal ancestors
through the Hickman family.
